Morro Bay Bird Festival : Learn more here

Festival Keynote: Ornitherapy: The Power of Birding - date TBA

with Holly Merker

In today’s fast-paced world, slowing down by noticing birds offers many rewards, especially by supporting our mental and physical well-being. Research shows that time spent surrounded by wild birds and thriving natural ecosystems actively reduces stress, depression, and anxiety, while supporting heart health and a stronger immune system.

Within the program we’ll delve into our personal connections to birds, learn how to maximize the wellness benefits while birding, cultivate a relationship of reciprocity to deepen stewardship, and cover the latest research affirming the positive impact of wild birds on human wellbeing.

Attend a Mindful Birding Field Trip during Morro Bay Bird Festival with Holly Merker - Date TBA

Mindful Birding

Mindful Birding combines bird observation with mindfulness practices that help us slow down, pay attention, and deepen our connection with nature. Rather than focusing on identifying birds, the emphasis is on noticing, with birds serving as our guides. This approach can amplify the wellness benefits associated with both birding and mindfulness and cultivate reciprocity.

Through guided instruction, participants will engage in simple mindfulness practices that awaken the senses and encourage intentional attention to birds and the natural world. Ornitherapy Explorations accompany the walk, enhancing observation skills and fostering deeper experiences with birds that support personal wellbeing.

Participants will receive a take-home journal to encourage continued exploration and awareness.

No prior experience with birding or mindfulness is necessary. All are welcome.
