Panama: A Cloud Forest Retreat & the Canal Zone

Led by Holly Merker of Hillstar Nature and Judy Montgomery of Delaware Nature Society

One of the most biodiverse countries in the world, about the size of South Carolina, Panama boasts 1000+ species of birds. Widely known for its 51-mile long canal, it is not just a transit place for humans. Hundreds of thousands of birds follow the “S-shaped” isthmus, threading the needle between North and South America over Panama. Migrant and resident birds are braced by waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, combining color and intrigue.

On this weeklong retreat, sample lowland rainforest birding at the canal, followed by an extended stay at one of Panama's best kept secrets, Mount Totumas. Few birding lodges combine such a relaxed atmosphere with such thrilling birds. Join us as we soak up Cloud Forest vibes, while seeking Resplendent Quetzal, Three-wattled Bellbird, Keel-billed Toucan, and other iconic Neotropical birds and animals.

At Mount Totumas lodge, Resplendent Quetzals are nesting nearby, and sometimes right near the buildings!

This trip is billed as a Hillstar “Chill Mode” tour, which means that while we will be meeting lots of birds, there are opportunities to opt out of guided walks and instead, chill out in front of the vibrant and active fruit flowers, hummingbird feeders, and flowers, or simply bask in the lush beauty and healing energy of nature.
